Kitchen cabinet layout isn’t just about filling walls with storage. It’s about creating a space that actually works for how you cook, eat, and live. A poorly planned layout makes cooking frustrating, wastes valuable space, and creates traffic jams when multiple people use the kitchen simultaneously.
Here’s what makes layout planning tricky: Every kitchen has different dimensions, architectural quirks, and user needs. What works beautifully in your neighbor’s kitchen might create problems in yours. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution—just principles and guidelines that help you make smart decisions for your specific space.
This guide walks you through everything you need to plan an effective cabinet layout covering standard kitchen configurations, the work triangle principle, cabinet dimensions, planning for appliances, and handling the quirks common in older Portage and Valparaiso homes.

Understanding Standard Kitchen Layouts
Most kitchens fall into a few basic configurations, each with advantages and challenges.
Galley Kitchens: Two parallel walls of cabinets with a corridor between them. This efficient layout is common in Chicago apartments and older Northwest Indiana homes where space is limited. The challenge is maintaining adequate corridor width—you need at least 42 inches between facing cabinets for comfortable movement, ideally 48 inches if multiple people cook together.
L-Shaped Kitchens: Cabinets run along two perpendicular walls forming an L. This is one of the most popular layouts in Portage homes because it provides good counter space while leaving the room open to adjacent living areas. The main challenge is the corner where walls meet—standard corner cabinets waste significant space.
U-Shaped Kitchens: Cabinets on three walls creating a U configuration. This layout maximizes storage and counter space, ideal for serious cooks who need abundant workspace. U-shaped kitchens work best in rooms at least 10 feet square. Plan for at least 4-5 feet of open space in the center of the U for comfortable movement.
Single-Wall Kitchens: All cabinets, appliances, and workspace on one wall. Common in studio apartments and very small homes. If you have at least 12 feet of wall length, you can fit sink, stove, and refrigerator with some counter space between.
Island and Peninsula Additions: Islands work in kitchens with adequate floor space—at least 13×13 feet is ideal. They add storage, seating, and work surface while creating defined zones in open-concept layouts. Peninsulas connect to existing cabinetry, creating additional work surface without requiring as much floor space.

The Work Triangle Principle
The kitchen work triangle refers to the relationship between your three primary work areas: sink, stove, and refrigerator.
An efficient work triangle has these characteristics. The total distance between the three points should be between 12 and 26 feet. No single leg should be shorter than 4 feet or longer than 9 feet. Traffic paths shouldn’t cut through the triangle, forcing people to walk between you and the stove while you’re cooking.
Why these measurements? Too small and the kitchen feels cramped with insufficient counter space between work zones. Too large and you’re walking excessive distances while cooking. The sweet spot creates efficiency without crowding.
In galley kitchens, the triangle often becomes more of a line with appliances distributed along facing walls. In L-shaped and U-shaped kitchens, position your primary appliances so they create a compact triangle. A common effective arrangement places the sink in the center of one wall with stove and refrigerator on either side or on the adjacent wall.
Modern kitchens sometimes break from strict triangle rules when they include multiple work zones. A large kitchen might have a main prep area near the sink, a cooking zone at the stove, and a beverage station elsewhere. That’s fine—just ensure each zone has what it needs within easy reach.
Standard Cabinet Dimensions
Understanding standard cabinet sizes helps you plan effectively and ensures appliances fit properly.
Base Cabinets: Standard base cabinets are 24 inches deep and 34.5 inches tall. Add a 1.5-inch countertop and you get the standard 36-inch counter height. Base cabinet widths come in 3-inch increments starting at 9 inches up to 48 inches. Common sizes are 12, 15, 18, 24, 30, and 36 inches wide.
You need at least 36 inches of continuous counter space for primary food prep. Plan 18-24 inches of landing space on either side of the sink for dish staging. Include 15-18 inches of counter beside the stove for hot pan placement.
Wall Cabinets: Standard wall cabinets are 12 inches deep and come in heights of 30, 36, or 42 inches. The 30-inch height is most common, leaving 18 inches between countertop and wall cabinet bottom—the standard backsplash area.
In homes with 8-foot ceilings, 42-inch wall cabinets extend nearly to the ceiling, maximizing vertical storage. Wall cabinets typically install with their bottom edge 54 inches from the floor, putting the cabinet bottom 18 inches above standard counters.
Tall Cabinets: Pantry and tall cabinets typically run 84 or 96 inches tall, essentially floor-to-ceiling. They’re usually 12 or 24 inches deep. A 24-inch deep pantry provides excellent storage but projects as far as base cabinets. A 12-inch deep pantry saves floor space while still providing substantial storage.

Planning for Appliances
Appliances dictate much of your layout. They have specific space requirements that constrain cabinet placement.
Refrigerator: Standard refrigerators are 30-36 inches wide and roughly the same depth as base cabinets. Place your refrigerator where it doesn’t block work areas or create traffic problems. Corner locations often work well. Ensure the door has clearance to open fully. Include 15 inches of landing counter space beside the refrigerator for unloading groceries.
Range or Cooktop: Standard ranges are 30 inches wide. Ensure you have 15-18 inches of counter on at least one side for staging while cooking. Never place a range in a corner—you need accessible counter space adjacent. Don’t place it directly under a window if possible.
Sink: Sinks typically need a 30-36 inch base cabinet depending on sink size. The sink often works well centered on a wall or in an island. Under-sink cabinets have plumbing that limits interior storage options. Plan for trash pull-outs or cleaning supply storage here rather than drawers.
Dishwasher: Dishwashers are 24 inches wide and install adjacent to the sink—within 36 inches is ideal for plumbing and workflow. Place it on the side of the sink closest to dish storage to minimize carrying clean dishes. Leave 21-24 inches of clearance in front for comfortable loading.
Base Cabinet vs. Wall Cabinet Balance
How much of your wall space should have upper cabinets versus open wall?
Maximum storage advocates put wall cabinets everywhere possible. This maximizes storage but can make kitchens feel closed in, especially in smaller spaces.
A more open approach uses wall cabinets strategically rather than everywhere. Eliminate uppers in some areas for open shelving, windows, or just clear wall space. This creates a lighter, more open feeling.
Consider where you actually need upper storage. Above the sink, wall cabinets are valuable for frequently-used dishes and glasses. Beside the stove, a wall cabinet holds spices and cooking oils you use constantly. But do you need cabinets above the refrigerator where access is awkward anyway?
In many Northwest Indiana kitchens, a good balance uses wall cabinets on major work walls while leaving peninsulas or island areas without uppers to maintain sight lines into adjacent spaces in open-concept homes.
Solving Corner Problems
Corners are where cabinets get tricky. Poor corner planning wastes significant storage space.
Lazy Susan Cabinets: These spinning shelves make corner contents accessible with a simple turn. Corner lazy Susan cabinets typically require a 36-inch cabinet on each wall of the corner. The diagonal front door provides access to the spinning shelves inside.
Diagonal Corner Cabinets: Instead of a 90-degree corner, a diagonal cabinet faces outward at 45 degrees. This eliminates the hard-to-reach back corner entirely, creating fully accessible interior space. You lose a few inches along each adjacent wall but gain practical storage.
Blind Corner Solutions: Blind corner cabinets with pull-out shelving systems bring contents forward for access. They’re more expensive than lazy Susans but can be more space-efficient.
Just End the Run: Sometimes the best solution is ending cabinet runs before corners, leaving dead space unused. If you have adequate storage elsewhere, accepting this loss might be simpler and less expensive than complex corner solutions.
Special Considerations for Older Homes
If you’re working with a vintage home in Portage or Valparaiso, you’ll encounter challenges that newer construction doesn’t present.
Older homes often have walls that aren’t perfectly straight, floors that aren’t perfectly level, and corners that aren’t true 90 degrees. These issues affect cabinet installation but can be managed with proper planning.
Measure carefully at multiple points along each wall. Don’t assume parallel walls are the same distance apart at each end—they often aren’t in older homes. Your cabinet plans need to accommodate these variations with filler strips.
Windows and doors in older homes sometimes aren’t positioned where you’d place them in modern construction. Work with these features rather than fighting them. Sometimes relocating a door or window makes sense, but often it’s easier to adapt your cabinet plan.
Older homes might have radiators, oddly placed electrical outlets, or plumbing in locations that seem random by modern standards. These constraints limit your options but creative planning can work around most challenges.
Creating Your Layout Plan
Start by measuring your space thoroughly. Record the length of each wall, ceiling height, door and window locations and dimensions, existing plumbing and electrical locations, and any architectural features or obstacles.

Place your major appliances first based on existing plumbing and electrical if you’re not relocating these utilities. Then plan base cabinets around appliances, ensuring proper clearances and counter space. Add wall cabinets above base cabinets where they make sense. Finally plan for corners using appropriate solutions.
Review your plan for these key points. Is the work triangle functional? Do you have adequate counter space for food prep? Can appliance doors open fully? Is there enough room for people to move around comfortably? Does traffic flow make sense?
